Fish Tales is next to the marina where my family keeps our boat. I wouldn't recommend making a pilgrimage to dine at Fish Tales but if you're in the area it's not half bad. I would recommend starting with a rum runner, but not if you're driving. They make one of the strongest rum runners I've ever had. It's really great to grab after being on the boat all day. They also have cheap beer. Beware of the well drinks There is a sign over the bar that says something to the effect of, "If you want fast service go somewhere else". I believe it's supposed to be funny but essentially it's true. They will get your drinks out fast but the food will take some time. The food is fine. I don't fine it offensive but It's nothing to write home to mom about (but obviously worth writing to yelp about). They have pretty good french fries and chicken fingers. The grouper sandwich is as good as the fish is fresh. To put it simply, it's a step above fast food. The prices are reasonable. If we moved our boat I'd most likely never step foot in Fish Tales again. It's a shame it's not better since it is next to a popular marina and one of the few restaurants you can reach by boat.

On vacation in St Pete. Ran across a Groupn for this place and decided to try it out.. I am not a big seafood lover, however the other members of my party absolutely love seafood and were craving scallops. this is a quaint little place on the river next to a big marina. All the seating is outside. The service was good, but the flies were horrible, they were all over everything. we got the grilled Grouper with Scallops, the grouper was just ok, it had a more fishy taste than use to. The scallops were very good. I being the land lubber got the fajitas, never get fajitas at a seafood restaurant, totally hit the mark on that one, the tortillas were all stuck together and the chicken was tasteless. The salsa tasted like it cam straight out of a jar and there was no guacamole with it. The kids got the hamburger and pizza stcks were they really enjoyed.

Local dive on the water. Great draft beer prices. Cool breezes and friendly staff. Food is what you expect from a dive bar. Maybe a little better. Come to people watch.

This is what eating out in Old Florida is all about, too bad the food isn't up to par. Atmosphere 85 (Marina boatyard riverside setting) Service 75 (On par for type of eatery) Food 65 (It was good a long time ago. Too bad!) Value 75 (Not the food, the setting) Drink a lot of beer and enjoy the outdoors. Forget the food.

Great atmosphere. Friendly and fast bartender with a nice heavy pour, the night we went, but who wants to drink out of a styrofoam cup? Snow crab legs were great and so was the atmosphere and band. Whoever shucks the oysters needs to get a little better.

My boss and I were in St. Petersburg to do some training at the Hampton Inn on 34th St. He's from Minnesota, I'm from Charlotte, and our two business companions are from Des Moines. So we were all out of our element. We asked the front desk attendant to recommend his favorite fish/seafood restaurant, or some place the locals would eat. He said, "Well, it's kind of a simple bar, but it's cool, and the fish is great." That's how we heard about this place! Yes it is a bit of a Dive Bar, not to be confused with a Dive Shop. When we walked in, around dusk on Nov. 9, there was a group of older men and women at a table nearest the water, singing Irish fishing and sailing songs in four part harmony, a Capella. Anyway, the martinis were huge and strong, the Ahi tuna appetizers were fresh and tasty, the smoked wings were good, and the fish/seafood skillet platters were great. The atmosphere is laid back. But the service on a Monday night was efficient, without being intrusive. There are the ubiquitous table-side TVs, more screens over the bar, and because the place has open sides, you get a sense of the marina around you. That was nice when we were there, but I can see how it could get loud or smelly or hot or buggy... or occasionally cold. (But this is Tampa, so that must be fairly rare.) All in all, this was a relaxing and satisfying evening, with good food and drinks. Check it out! As someone else sort of said here, it gets 4 stars for the kind of place it aspires to be, but it isn't four stars in Zagat or any guide like that. It's elegantly shabby in an "I've got a two-day growth of beard but I'm wearing a sport coat and jeans" sort of way.

Purchased a coupon for this restaurant on livingsocial. What a waste of money. Checked online menu before purchasing. Many items no longer served. Food was mediocre at best. At 6:00 pm on Wednesday there where 3 other people there. I wonder why!!

AVerage. Yes, it's in a cool tucked away location but it is right next to, or more like in, a working marina. So you get lots of boat fumes with your food. The food was ok, nothing special, it was hard to tell the fish sandwich from the chicken each one tasted so bland. Service was good and drinks were cheap. They do have Stella on draught so that's a plus! They have a bar that gets really crowded too but I agree with Sandy, it just doesn't feel very clean! If you use the restroom you'll see the inner workings and know for sure it could use a scrub down.

I love to go to Fish Tales with friends for cocktails. The location right on the water is great. They know how to pour a strong drink and the cocktails come in styrofoam cups so the drink doesn't get immediately watered down in the summer heat. This place has a dock and it's always fun to watch people try to maneuver their boats up. I like that it doesn't get too rowdy and the bartenders are cool. All seating is outside and there is music and tv's for entertainment when no one is docking their boats.

Why no zero star for these people? We go in, want a cold draft or two and perhaps a light snack, or even a full meal. We take a seat by the water/canal and one of the ripped and stained t-shirt wearing staffers complained that we should not take a "4-top" since we were just a twosome. Since it was in the odd hour of 3p.m. (long before dinner and well after lunch) and because there were 20 other empty tables and just one table with patrons, and two folks at the bar, we kind of chucked, "You're kidding, right?" Uhh uhh yeah, okay you can sit there but you might have to move if we get a rush. Not a lot of friendliness, but we sit down and notice a couple of beers going by in clear plastic cups and the menu prices look like they should be served in chilled mugs, etc. etc. TIME TO GO, the service was bad, not made to feel welcome and the prices were way to high for a self described "dive bar."

Okay, we're going to practice some visualization. I want you to close your eyes. Go ahead...yes, even you there in the back. Now, I want you to imagine a happy place. You in the back, I said happy PLACE - no hand motions associated with the happy place please. Clearly some of you are having a problem with the happy place concept. You need some more structure? Fine, I can do that. Eyes still closed everyone. So we're going to imagine a relaxing, low-key spot. Maybe near water. Water always seems so relaxing, doesn't it? That's good. Add a little sound now - water lapping, maybe a boat bell in the distance, a touch of bird call...who's snoring? Could someone please poke the guy in the back row for me? Thanks. Maybe we need to liven up the happy place a bit. Give it a bit more structure. Let's transfer this to a marina or boat dock. And I want you all to imagine a beat up looking shack on the water edge, built right onto the dock. Now if we're in a happy place and we're on the water and it's a lovely warm climate then we can't possibly go inside the shack, can we? That would have to be the kitchen or something. So keep imagining - let's put a big deck around the side of the shack, right out over the water. And maybe a nice long bar under a shady awning. Casual seating, grungily comfortable plastic-covered menus, plentiful cheap beer and wine, yummy fish tacos, docking facilities for boats...and a pool table. Right out there on the dock, under the sky. Now that's a happy place. You may all open your eyes now. Any questions? Yes, you in the back row? Restrooms...No, I don't think I remembered to put restrooms in. Do I need to think of everything? Fine, we'll put restrooms across the lot by the boat storage. Class dismissed.

Was here again recently. The Crab Cake sandwich, minus the bun!, was good, but nothing to brag about. The cole slaw was alright, but I prefer my own! It wasn't a total wash, but I don't think I'll order this item again. The beer was nice and cold and the bartender at the tiki bar was a hoot.

This was always a go-to place for decent food, a beautiful setting, good service and a great place to bring out of town guests. We hadn't been there in about six months and went again yesterday. It pains me to give it a 1-star review because this place has been a favorite for so long, but, really, it was just terrible. We have no idea what's happened. It started when we were essentially commanded to sit at the bar rather than a table by a server (who, we're pretty sure, didn't want two people taking up a table for four, even though there were lots of empty tables). The poor woman who waited on us must've been new, but, if so, her training was totally inadequate. When my husband asked about an unfamiliar beer, she told him it was brewed in FL. Turned out it was Belgian. We were subjected to lots of carping by servers about various colleagues calling in sick and so forth (really not interested in listening to this, guys). The food took forever to come and was mediocre. I had a particular problem with paying $6 per glass of 4 oz. wine poured out of a mini bottle, and my husband was not entranced with paying the same for pretty average beer. It took three attempts to straighten out the bill (we were overcharged for a grouper sandwich which was on special that day), and the server was utterly incapable of applying a $10 coupon. She finally gave up, and just didn't charge us for the grouper sandwich. She literally could not figure it out. All in all, overpriced, mediocre food and really poor service, sad to say.

I'm grading this place 4 stars based on the type of place it is. It sure isn't your 4-star fine-dining experience, but for a local dive on the water, this place blows other local dives on the water away. I say this because you get a heap of seafood for really cheap here. And, it's good seafood! Try the skillets! Fun for the whole family. Laid back and casual, just how it should be on the water.

  • Mike C.

you don't go to fish tales to eat. you go to drink and watch idiots dock their boats. but if you HAVE to eat, stick with the crab cake sandwich and/or bread sticks. solid jams.

I have a love / hate relationship with Fish Tales. Would I actually drive there intentionall for dinner? No. Would I recommed it as one of the best places to eat in St. Pete? Heck No. Is it one of the ONLY spots to get to by boat? YES! Ding, Ding, Ding.... that's the reason we go. We have escaped many a storm while out on the boat and rode some bad weather out with a few adult libations. Food is hit and miss. I have been MANY times so it's to really say what is a must get. The snow crabs last time were really good. The fish spread is always a good hit and fresh. Others in the party liked their Fish and Chips and Burgers. There are some things like their skillets which really should revamped. Cocktails are so-so. Not the best margarita I have ever tasted but not the worst. Add Sangria to your "FULL" bar please. Refreshing on the water!

Cool little place right on the water. Saw some dolphins right by the dock which made the place even cooler. Went with three people and everyone ended up eating and drinking. First, the place had 23 beers on tap. Perfect! Grabbed a soup (stone crab chowder) and some apps (fried oysters and conch fritters) then fish tacos and a grouper sandwich. Soup was good but nothing amazing. Nice chunks of crab. Oysters were tasty but there was about a gallon of fryer oil in the basket (let those suckers drain!). Fritters were tasty but nothing special. Grouper sandwich was served in a hoagie bun and was a nice sandwich. Nothing mind blowing but still a solid sandwich. The highlight were the fish tacos. Two gigantic tacos served with a garlicky sauce. Delicious! Place seemed like a outdoor hole in the wall that the locals seem to visit. It's located within a marina which provides even more site seeing. Great little place!

If you want a great margarita, ask for Dawn or Jessica! They kill it! I don't know what goes into their fish taco sauce, but you could eat it alone with a spoon. I had a great evening there with friends even though it was chilly. It's too bad they don't have heaters!

If you get the ahi tuna skillet for $14, YOU WILL NOT GO WRONG! It was healthy, prepared perfectly, and filling. The tuna was about 8 oz so it was a good portion! Make this place a destination to try. The service was good. There is seating under the open air patio or outside. It's on the canal so you can watch the sailboats idle by. It also is across the water from ELITE YACHTS/MARINE. This was why we chose this place.

  • Gabriella D.

Have not tried the food here. When we walked up there was a table who had their dog sitting at the table with them. We were told that dogs can sit at any table with customers and made the wise decision to dine elsewhere. Gave the impression they were too casual when it came to cleanliness, flip flops and shorts welcome please! Though it is on the water it's not beachy, more like a Marina you would never step foot in to swim or fish in either. Found out about them via groupon, so glad I didn't actually buy it yet.

  • Ashley J.

This is a great place to grab a few drinks. The food here is hit or miss though. We do like the conch fritters. The food though we have had better seafood at other places around the city but for a great casual place to grab a drink this is the place!

Wouldn't have known about this place unless some locals told us about it. Supper hidden, and what a shame because its such a cool place. The whole thing is outside, but its covered, perfect for Florida's weather. The whole place is right on the water and the cool part is that there is boat parking right next to the seating area. Very unique feel to this place, kind of divy and homey feel to it. The tables aren't too clean. the floor isn't that clean, the side railings have writing all over them, but thats what makes this place so cool to be at. The food here is good. I didn't get any entrees which is why i couldn't give this place 5 starts, but the apps where really great. Got some mix drinks here too which were very tasty. Its a shame I live so far from this place because I would totally come here more often. Another plus of this place is that is looks like it is pet friendly, they even have a dish for dogs. :) So wether you're on the water or coming from land, this place has a spot for you. All in all I love the feel of this place and would totally come here again!!

I love fish tales! I have edited this review from my previous one. I have since been here multiple times. And it is proven to be a nice place. This is more like a family owned and run place. The bartenders and servers are very friendly. Sometimes it gets really busy. Especially on Sunday power hour. Dawn, Marie, and the other girls do a great job tending to patrons and their regulars. I always get the smoked fish dip with jalapenos. And a side salad. The side salad is awesome! And the bread served with it is amazing. When I first started coming here, the food wasn't that great. I think they've done a great job it really shaping up the place. This place has the opportunity to be awesome given it's location. But the dock is currently being repaired. You can often spot manatee in the water by the boats. It's a very quaint little place and one of my favorite spots.

  • Chris R.

Been here a handful of times and always enjoy it. The food is good not great...bar food based with fish dominated of course. The wait staff is awesome. Very friendly and courteous. The view is nice...not perfect but nice being on the channel watching the fish jumping. All outdoor seating which can be brutal during the summer months, but with plenty of fans and some tiki hut voodoo, you really stay cool. I enjoy meeting friends here or having a quiet dinner with the wife.

  • Katie S.

Why three stars? Because the food was good, and the location on the water is sweet! Fish Tales is a cute, hidden little spot. They serve up the typical bar-like food, which was solid. The real draw, for me, was the bayou-esque location on the water. It is a serene, peaceful spot close to downtown St. Pete. I will most certainly be back!

    (3)
  • Wayne S.

Is it possible to award no stars??? Disgusting food. I ate there about a year ago and think I'm still a little queasy. It's much like the Dominican Republic in that you should not consume anything from this place that didn't come directly from a bottle which someone opened right in front of you. At that point, you may as well just drink your beer at home.

    (1)
  • Paulie V.

Stay away! I trusted yelp so I urged people not to go but the majority ruled. I played it safe by getting the fish and chips because it can't really be screwed up. WRONG! I don't think one person really enjoyed their food. It was horrible. My fish and chips tasted like scrambled eggs... Wtf?? They were semi crisp and mostly soggy. I have to check up on a friend to make sure they didn't get food poisoning from the tuna or oysters. I'm even hoping my fish was okay. Ultimately the experience was overpriced for the garbage they served. The best food is the lays chips and saltine crackers... Sealed and protected from this hell hole RUNNNNN

    (1)
  • Erbos X.

I'd give it a 3 and a half. Grouper wrap was excellent. Coleslaw was WAY too sweet. (When are people going to stop letting restaurants turn us into a nation of diabetics? They keep loading all our food with sugar!) So nice to have lunch by the water. The tiki hut kept the rain off.

There some nostalgic quality to this place... reminds me of some lovely spots I used to spend time on along the St. Marks River. It's a dive. Can't recommend the food. I was fooled into think that $10 nachos must be good, but it was gross... fake cheese, processed salsa? Huge let down. Great and extensive beer selection.

    (3)
  • Matthew J.

Over the years...total love-hate with this place. HOWEVER...they have MASSIVELY improved their quality since the beginning of 2014...probably because of all the crap reviews on here. They were hitting groupon hard, I am glad someone finally got the message that improving quality beats Groupon-ing any day. The menu is (was?) literally a minefield. Some great places to "step" (like another reviewer's spot-on analysis of the relatively great Ahi Tuna skillet...like slightly seared sushi, so good and a great all around package...get it on special and it's a no-brainer), but so many other choices WERE just disasters. I have since had fried grouper sandwiches there that were as good or better than Frenchy's, the skillet above is great, the chicken wings are FINALLY respectable!! Anyhow, their formerly LOUSY sides (like uber-bland coleslaw) and so on have improved noticeably...although I wouldn't say dramatically. Much better than they were though. Anyways, for me, it's close, the beer is cheap ($10.50 for a pitcher of Yuengling...YES PLEASE), and the view of the creek is peaceful and a treat. So it would have gotten two stars, maybe three, in the past...but as a "TOTAL PACKAGE" I'm giving them a four star rating. Should be like 3.75, but close enough.

Love hate with this place. Everything is hit or miss!! Last time we got the owners daughter in law. Who we felt has a job for that reason alone. She sucked! And the cook at the time(a lady) wouldn't prepare a piece of fish for us! It's all my gf wanted. Blackened filet of fish. She settled with and got the highly recommended nachos. The main sauce was ketchup!!!!?? Wtf? Like I said it's hit or miss. We've had great service before and food. It all depends when you go and who is working :-/

This was the most HORRIFYING dining experience we have ever had. The peel and eat shrimp smelled and tasted like wet dog, and that is NOT an exaggeration. I am still trying to get the smell off of my fingertips. Fish tacos???? Uhhhh not tacos at all but rather an over salted burrito from hell, covered in raw cayenne. Poor man'a plate??? Disgusting! Rubbery shrimp, bland potatoes, and salty wilted shit for beans. The food however wasn't even the worst part. There was a freaking cat roaming around our table and the entire dining area. Other than the waitresses and bar tender meekly shooing it away, no attempt was made to remove this disgusting, feral creature from our area. I am currently having an allergic reaction to this beast. Thank you fish tales for making my first day of vacation so epic. You are the WORST dining establishment in the world!

    (1)
  • Kelly C.

Fish Tales is an excellent spot for riding out a storm, docking mid boat trip, or getting through paperwork when the weather is too nice to stay in the office. The crab cakes are excellent (no mayo!), I think they've recently adopted a half-price happy hour on drafts & appetizers (& probably liquor) from 4 - 7, and all the bartenders are endearing. When they're available, the crawfish buckets are awesome.

  • Paul W.

Happy happy place. Allison was our server and the service was off the hook( no pun intended ). Our party had everything from cheeseburgers to fish lasagna. Yummy. Our food came out quickly and hot. The drinks were fun. Cheers!

So good. Huge portions. The volcano crab cakes are the best! Huge crab legs. Great beer selection- right on the water. Comes highly recommended. Hush puppies are big and delicious too! The seating options are all out door- it's very cool

We've been going to Fish Tales for years now and for what it is - we love it!! Where else can you go and ACTUALLY SIT AT waterside in a casual, kitschy atmosphere without going to the beach area, fighting for parking and by the time you get through the herd of people it's really not worth it? Not looking at water from afar - it's right there! Fish Tales is one of our south St Pete best kept secrets (except when they do a Groupon and get super busy). It's like stepping back in old Florida, has character and charm. Sure sometimes the service is not the fastest, other times it's great. Over the past year and a half the food has improved quite a bit. If you're looking for fine dining and superb service, then go somewhere else and spend more money. We love the fish and chips and their chicken quesadillas. And as for the cups not being glass - you're on the water in a boating area! Hello? We love the place -

We wanted a dive bar... And we found a I've bar. Just finished checking out the Dali and wanted to relax and have a drink. This place did the trick. Th waitress was friendly. And the atmosphere was very chill. Michael paid the bill but it did seem just a little steep for what we got. The drinks were not bad, but they weren't overly impressive either. It was relaxing to just sit and watch the water and the boats while we relaxed. It was worth making the stop here. And the waitress was very friendly.

I must admit its all open concept. We picked a freezing day to go and although the food came out freezing I had a fabulous time the nachos were incredible and ever the chicken fingers were good. Pick a day that is pleasant outside. I will definitly go back

  • Amanda B.

All the food that we had was good. The fish bowl was super awesome. We really liked the place too. It's a super relaxed place. The whole place is outdoors on the water. The service was a little bit slow, but it fit with the kinda place that it was. It's just not a fly in and fly out kinda place. We really liked it and will be going back for sure.

Great place to chill by the water. Try the fish bowl very good. Nice happy hour crowd and I would recommend this as a great place to chill after work.

Here's what I have to say following first time visit on Memorial Day 2013: YAY! This is an out of the way seafood place in the old Southeast section of Saint Petersburg, not far from the USFSP campus. SUPER AMBIENCE with the Tiki roofed dining areas and this is an OPEN AIR restaurant ON THE WATER. The wall decor is salty and amusing, such as many pairs of swim fins and jokey stuff. It is co-located with a marina. The restrooms are a bit out of the way but do the tour: you'll like it anyway. We had the Monday skillet specials - he had white fish; I had the grilled shrimp. Great value for $10 with a salad, mashed potato, and green beans. Service was terrific, and our food was served up hot and delicious. The only little gripe was the lettuce (iceberg is simply a nutritional wimp) but there was an amazing array of dressings to choose from and the salad had sunflower seeds, tomato, onion, radish. The skillet was the cast iron thing with the handle covered in the thingamabob that protects you from burning. This is a fun place with good food, great ambience and we will go back! Highly recommended by this fussy yelper.

  • Andrew B.

The problems start with parking. But when you've finally found a space and get out of your car, you'll notice the smell. It smells like seafood, yes, but more like low tide than Red Lobster. Then come the overpriced drinks and cold food. But nothing put a chill on our evening like the snarling management. I doubt highly that Fish Tales will stay in business, and that's a shame. It could be a real gem for our Burg, but with anti-customer attitudes it will amount to little. Save yourself save yourself some mental and intestinal distress. Dodge this bullet.

This is my wife's experience on a Thursday night with friend's from church... 8 people went and only 2 liked their meals. The waitress was pleasant but food took forever to come out. When it finally got to the table, it was cold. The place was dirty. She ordered the chicken fajitas and almost choked on a piece chicken bone hidden in it. Our friend ordered chicken quesidillas and it was cold, too. What else is new? How does anyone mess quesidillas up?!? My wife's sitting here on the sofa sick from the dinner.

Been here a few times. Food is very good. Fish spread better than a lot of places, improvement would be Captains wafers instead of Saltines. Fish sandwich one of the best in Tampa Bay area. Try it with cheese and cole slaw , a 10 ! Staff friendly and do a good job.

What a disappointment! We came in for a Sunday lunch before getting back on the road to head home. A couple of friends who keep their boats at the marina had suggested it as a good, divey, hole in the wall restaurant for locals. We wanted to experience local seafood since after all, St. Petersburg is known for its fishing. We were in "chill mode" when we arrived so we had no immediate rush to get our food; we ordered the Ahi Tuna and the Guacamole but were surprised to see that the guac, didn't come with chips?!?!?! You had to order the chips and salsa in order to get chips.. even if you didn't want any salsa! This is where it all began to go downhill! We started noticing that other patrons were complaining about the length of their wait and returning several items, so we went ahead and ordered to reduce any further delay. We ordered a Blackened Grouper Sandwich and a Grilled Mahi Sandwich. While waiting for our food we noticed several disappointing and even more questionable food handling violations; 1. It seemed as though the waiters and kitchen where at an all out civil war, where all the blame was on how slow the kitchen brought out its food, and once it did get it out the quality of the food was under par. 2. While food was delayed and customers agitated due to the long wait, a couple of waiters would be chewing on something as they came to serve the food. As if they were taste testing your nachos for example, before serving it to your table. 3. There is no customer service in this place whatsoever; rather than assist one another, we saw 2 bar tenders with maybe 2 customers at the bar, hanging out talking, rather than helping bring out the food and at least having a couple of customers satisfied. This place acts like it doesn't need your business, and soon enough it will be out of business. The food once it arrived was alright, I don't think you can get a fish sandwich that wrong, but all in all it was a waste of time and a disappointment over all. Keep in mind the view you get here is people leaving the marina on their boats, there is nothing in the view that would make you want to come back, with that said the quality of the food and staff should be above par. We did have a nice waiter and that's the only reason I gave a second star, I believe his name was Drew, however if Drew is reading this, I highly suggest you look around for a place that deserves and instills quality service. By witnessing the owners and family waltz around like everything was all good, without even talking to any table that did not have a friend of theirs seated at, one can only assume this business is not a priority for them.

Webcams for a website? Odd. Have eaten at Fish Tales a couple of times. The first time it was okay (we had a few beers, had dinner, and played pool). The food was not noteworthy. They do not serve fried foods at all, which I find I want at a place like this (nice fresh fried fish!). The second time we just had a quick meal, and I found that I kept thinking "this place doesn't look very clean." Made me want to rush right out. Not sure I can go back again. The tucked-away waterfront location is great, but somehow they just don't quite make it in my book.

Used to be one of our favorites but they haven't had stone crabs in months. It's to bad because they make them perfectly. Still a nice bar by the water but the food is so so. Had the seafood fajita and the crab meet was cold and dry.
